Bittorrent ist der Urahn von Filesharingclients wie BitComet, Shareaza und Azureus. In diesem Netzwerk lassen sich vorrangig neueste Blockbuster, Kinofilme und Videos in DVD-Qualität als SVCD/VCD oder XVCD sowie raubkopierte Spiele und komplette Musik-Alben innerhalb weniger Stunden herunterladen. Die Software benötigt kaum Einstellungen, zudem ist die Oberfläche klar und übersichtlich strukturiert.

Mit dem Filesharingclient Bittorrent werden (wie mit eMule und auch Overnet) vor allem Videos und komplette Musik-Alben ausgetauscht, aber auch alle anderen Arten von Dateien wie Software (Raubkopien) und Spiele, einzelne MP3s und Bilder. Die Software unterstützt Swarming, je nach Verfügbarkeit wird ein und dieselbe Datei (Dateiteile) von mehreren Usern parallel heruntergeladen. Dadurch erhöht sich die Download-Geschwindigkeit (bei Breitbandverbindungen wie DSL oder LAN) und es entstehen kaum Wartezeiten damit der Download beendet wird. Sollte der hochladende PC offline gehen greift Bittorrent auf andere verfügbare Quellen zu. Die Downloadgeschwindigkeit ist abhängig von eurer Uploadgeschwindigkeit. Eine Beonderheit des Bittorrent-Netzwerks sei hier noch erwähnt. Die Dateien werden durch .torrent-Dateien gestartet, dies sind Dateien die neben einem Tracker (Server) auch Hash-Werte über die Datei gespeichert haben. Ist ein Tracker offline oder nicht erreichbar, kann ein Download nicht gestartet werden, bereits angefangene Downloads laden aber weiter.

Bittorrent benötigt zur Herstellung von Downloadverbindungen mit Trackern (Server) keine Serverliste. In den .torrent´s sind alle notwendigen Informationen gespeichert, um eine Downloadverbindung aufzubauen. Aktuelle Serverlisten müßt ihr nur für eMule, eDonkey 2000 und eMule Plus downloaden.
